Kwik Sew 2918 – 4t pants

Paul is taking the kids to see a play today, Jack was looking for something nice to wear with his pants. Please note, we have a loose definition of nice around here. When you’re four, nice = not sweatpants. His nice pants were in the laundry pile and the washer was already running a load of towels. Since they were planning to leave in two hours, there was not enough time to get his pants through the washer and dryer.

Luckily, I had enough corduroy on hand to make a pair of pants. These are a bit of a repeat of the pair I made before, Kwik Sew 2918 in a 4T. I added an extra 1.5″ to the length and took an inch off the top. I sewed the corduroy completely and then sewed each leg in flannel. I put each flannel leg inside the corduroy, right sides together and then pulled them through and sewed the flannel leg pieces together at the crotch. I folded over the waist about 1.25″ and zigzagged it down with the elastic loop inside.

Good news is that the sweatshirt I made my nephew fit him! Bad news is, he really doesn’t know who Snoopy is! He did like Jack’s Tow Mater shirt, so I made another one of those in his size. It’s all set except for the fusi-knit on the back, but I’m waiting for it to dry after I washed off the water soluble stabilizer from the front. I’m hoping to get it in the mail Monday or Tuesday.

This is Kwik Sew 2912 again, this time in a 3T, which I’m hoping will either fit my nephew or leave him room to grow.

I forgot to mention it before, but this is the neatest fabric. It looks like a sweater knit on the front, but inside it’s the nicest soft fleece.

Kwik Sew 2912 in 4T. This is before washing out the stabilizer on the front.

This has two layers of water soluble on the top and a layer each of solvy sticky and cut away on the bottom.

flannel lined corduroy pants

Jack needed black pants for his holiday program. (He still needs a white shirt and red tie, but that’s another story.) These are no fuss elastic waist pants in a fine wale cord with a flannel lining.

These are Kwik Sew 2918, size 4T. They have a 1 3/8″ allowance for the elastic casing, so I took 1″ off the top of the flannel lining to reduce the bulk there. The colors in the photo are a bit off and I keep crashing GIMP when I try to adjust them. The corduroy is black, and the kitchen island they are laying on is also much darker than it appears.

Now, I have to admit to doing the dumbest thing. I sewed the corduroy into a pair, then sewed the flannel as a pair. I then put them inside each other and proceeded to connect them at the leg hems. Trying turning that back right side out. It doesn’t work. I picked apart one leg hem, then realized that what I really needed to do was take apart the crotch seams on the flannel. That wouldn’t have been too bad had I not sewed those first and then sewed the inseam as one length. Seam ripper, seam ripper…

Note to self – line pants as follows:

Sew outside pants.
Sew each leg of inner layer separately.
Attach inner and outer at leg hem.
Sew crotch of inner layer.
Sew waistband.

I made these a few weeks ago and am in the process of making another pair. Kwik Sew 3016, size 6 with the length of size 7 in the bottoms and an additional inch in the sleeves.

The embroidery for the top on the second one just finished.

The design is from Bunnycup Embroidery. It’s stabilized with a layer of Sulky Sticky + on the bottom and two layers of Super Solvy water soluble on top. Pink microfleece – cozy for winter.

Something for the boy I never sew for…

13 is challenging. On the one hand, you want your mom to do stuff for you just like she does for your siblings. On the other hand, you’re 13 and you want to wear cool stuff. This generally means sewing for Alex is pajamas.

This is Kwik Sew 3045, size XS. Based on the pattern information, this should have been much bigger on him. It’s fine, but if I make him another one, I’ll probably go with a size small. This is view B, which was to have hemmed rather than cuffed sleeves and a drawstring at the bottom hem. The drawstring was deemed stupid, so I didn’t bother with it. Hoodies have cuffs on the sleeves, so I added a 2″ cuff. Adding the cuff was probably a good idea since it also made the sleeve length more comfortable.

Fabric is 100wt microfleece from Malden Mills/Polartec. Very nice material, probably the best microfleece out there. It’s actually a pretty dark navy color, the camera flash kind of pops the color. Definitely a good color for Alex, though. Check out the blue eyes on this boy.
